1851 - 1922 The Story Begins

Originally built as a private school in 1851, Hamilton Hotel opened its doors in the early 1860s. Named by hotelier Admiral Horatio Bridge in honor of Eliza Hamilton Holly – a family friend and daughter of Alexander Hamilton – by the end of the 19th century the hotel was renowned for “the sophistication of its residents” and as “the scene of much political gossip.”

1922 - 2000 A New Landmark

In 1921 a plan was set in motion to build an 11-story, 300-room hotel, designed by celebrated architect Jules Henri de Sibour. Completed in 1922, the stunningly elegant new hotel offered a luxurious experience at a reasonable price, quickly becoming a hub of social life and commerce, hosting everyone from musicians and entertainers to labor leaders and presidents.

2001 - 2022 A Modern Icon

Now an iconic city landmark on the National Register of Historic Places, the independently owned Hamilton Hotel continues to honor the luxury and sophistication of its past, focusing on modern enjoyments, unique and thoughtful experiences and amenities, and celebrations of D.C.’s distinctive personality.
